Education Requirements

A Master of Social Work (MSW) is required to gain an LMSW license. The program you attend must be CSWE-accredited.

Background Check

All applicants are subject to a criminal background check before receiving a license. The information is processed electronically, and you must register on the company’s website that handles the checks. When you go for your fingerprints, all costs associated with the background check are due.

You can have your fingerprints scanned or register to have them taken manually. If you pass the background check, you can move to the next step in the application process. If you have something concerning on your record, you will be asked to appear before the Board and provide any information that gives insight into the matter. The Board will then decide if they want to proceed with the application process.

Applying for Licensure as a Master Social Worker

Submit your application for LMSW licensure through the Board’s website along with your fingerprints. Your school can send your transcript to the Board, and once you pay the $150 application fee, they’ll review the information.

If you meet all of the requirements for licensure, you’ll be given a provisional license to begin practicing under supervision. But before you start, you and the supervisor are required to fill out a supervision contract detailing the training plan. You are allowed to practice under the provisional license for one year.

Your provisional license will be taken away, and you’ll receive a permanent one after the Board has received all documentation that you’re eligible for licensure.

Examination Requirements

When the Board receives your completed application, they will inform you that you can register for the ASWB Master’s exam. The registration cost is $230 for the 170 multiple-choice question test. It takes about two weeks from the date you complete the exam for the Board to receive your results.
