Oklahoma Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) Licensure Process

LCSWs can provide clinical-level services to clients. They include:

  • Counseling
  • Psychotherapy
  • Assessing and diagnosing disorders

Education Requirements

An MSW from a CSWE-approved school or university is required for LCSW licensure.

Experience Requirements

You need to accrue 4,000 hours of supervised, full-time, postgraduate clinical experience in a two-year period for an LCSW license in Oklahoma. Your supervision contract must be submitted before beginning the clinical social work experience. You need direct involvement with clients for at least 3,000 hours, and 100 of them must be supervised. Your supervisor will document your progress and send evaluations to the board throughout the process. They will keep a log of your interactions.

Background Check

Background checks are necessary to obtain an LCSW license in Oklahoma. Register on the Idemia website and choose whether you’ll have your fingerprints scanned or manually taken. All fees related to the background check are paid when you visit a location to have the fingerprinting done.

If you pass the check, you’ll be allowed to take the exam. If you do not pass, you have the opportunity to address the Board and offer any information that will explain the charge or conviction from your past. The Board members will determine if you can proceed with the application process after hearing your appeal.

Applying for Licensure as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker

After you have completed the supervised experience requirement, you can apply for an LCSW license. At this level of licensure, the Board should have your transcript on file, but if they do not, you can request a copy be sent to them from your school. An application fee of $150 should be submitted along with your fingerprints for the background check.

A provisional license is given to you if your application is approved, and you will have the Board’s permission to take the ASWB Clinical Exam. The Board will grant your permanent license once they receive your passing score, which takes about two weeks. You will still need additional experience and further supervised training to supervise other social workers.

Examination Requirements

When you fulfill all the necessary requirements, the Board will inform you that you are ready to register for the exam. The ASWB Clinical exam registration costs $260, and your scores are automatically sent to the Board.
