Utah Certified Social Worker Intern (CSWI) Licensure Process

This is a license that allows you to give supervised mental health therapy to clients for six months as you prepare to take the ASWB Clinical exam.

Education Requirements

Either a doctoral degree in social work (DSW) or masters in social work (MSW) is needed from a program accredited by the CSWE. Here you can find all schools offering social work degree programs in Utah.

Background Check

Applying for this license means you will be given a fingerprint-based criminal background check. The information is submitted to the FBI for evaluation. Once you pass, the Board is notified.

If you are worried about any criminal convictions, you have the option of submitting an Application for Criminal History Determination. The Board will review your conviction and let you know if you are eligible to continue with the licensure process.

Examination Requirements

You must pass the ASWB Clinical exam before applying for a CSWI license. Once you apply for pre-approval by paying the $60 application fee, you’ll be notified once you’re able to sit down for the exam. You will then have to pay the $260 fee to register for the exam. When it’s completed, your test scores are sent directly to the Board.
