Maine Licensed Social Worker, Conditional (LSX) Licensure Process

This is the first step you must take toward becoming a social worker. A person with this license is only allowed to work under supervision. To get this license, you must meet the following requirements.

Educational Requirements

A bachelor’s degree in a social work (BSW)-related field is the educational requirement for an LSX license. This may include a bachelor’s degree in sociology, behavioral science, psychology, or human development. Your BSW from a Council on Social Work Education-accredited program. Here you can find all schools offering social work degree programs in Maine.

If you have the required degree for this license, you should also ask for your transcript to be sent to the Board by your institution.

Applying for Licensure as a Conditional Social Worker

  • You can apply for LSX by getting the application form from the board’s site.
  • Pay the required license fee of $70 with an additional $21 for a criminal background check. All checks are payable to Maine State Treasurer.
  • Have your transcript submitted to the board directly from the institution where you completed your bachelor’s degree
  •   You are required to submit the consultation contract from your proposed supervisor which is provided in the application form.
  • If your application is approved by the board, the LSX license will be emailed to you.

Following the issuance of your license, you can begin practicing under supervision to obtain the required hours for LSW licensure.
