Texas Licensed Masters Social Worker (LMSW) Licensure Process

With an LMSW license, you can perform the same services as an LBSW and:

  • LCSW supervised clinical services with an agency
  • Social services applying specialized knowledge and advanced practice skills

Independent practice is not within the scope of this license, so you have to be employed at an agency or organization providing social work services.

Education Requirements

You’ll need a Masters in Social Work (MSW) from a CSWE-accredited school or program. These programs take two years to complete unless you have a BSW. The BSW permits you to apply for an accelerated program where you can complete the degree in one year.

Here you can find all schools offering social work degree programs in Texas.

Background Check

All applicants must pass a fingerprint-based background check. The instructions will be sent to you once your application for licensure is confirmed by the Board.

Examination Requirements

Texas requires all licensure applicants to take the state Jurisprudence exam, which has a $40 fee. The test assesses your understanding of state and regulations to ensure your professional knowledge of ethical violations.

The other exam needed for licensure is the ASWB Master’s exam. The exam ensures you have the necessary competencies and professional abilities to assist clients effectively. The Board must approve your request to take the exam. Once they do, you’ll pay a $230 fee for the 170 multiple-choice question test.

Applying for Licensure as a Licensed Masters Social Worker

Apply online and submit the application along with the $91 non-refundable fee. Next, sign up and pay for the Jurisprudence exam, which has 126 questions and takes around two hours to complete. Print the certificate once you’ve completed the test.

Send in your Jurisprudence certificate to prove you passed the exam, which can be uploaded and electronically submitted with your application. The official transcript from your MSW program will be sent by your school. You’re also required to send an email containing your NPDB self-query report to: transcripts@bhec.texas.gov. It must still be in its sealed envelope if you mail it in. Send all hard copies to:

The Board will approve your request to take the ASWB Master’s exam once all of this information is received. It can take between 8-10 weeks for the application to be processed. After approval is given, register for the ASWB exam and schedule a testing appointment. After you finish the exam, your scores will be sent to the Board in approximately two weeks, and when they have your passing score, you will receive an LMSW license.
