License Renewal

The Massachusetts Board of Registration of Social Workers requires every license holder to renew their licenses every two years before birthdays.

The board will send a renewal notice to the email you supplied. This notice will include your authorization code with which you will request a license renewal. You are also required your license number/record ID to complete the renewal.

You will also need to meet your Continuing Education (CE) requirements and notify the board at swboard@mass.gov to qualify for a renewal. LICSWs cannot renew their licenses unless they show proof of an active MassHealth non-billing provider application.

Here are the CE requirements for the different licenses.

  • LSWA- Ten hours every two years.
  • LSW- Fifteen hours every two years.
  • LCSW- Twenty hours every two years.
  • LICSW- Thirty hours every two years.

Apply for renewal at the ePLACE licensing portal by opening an account and logging in. Next, go to the ‘Home’ tab and click on ‘Link Your Account’ to link your license. After linking your license, visit the ‘Manage Licenses, Permits, and Certificates’ section, where you will see an option to renew your license. Click ‘Renew Application’ to proceed.

Relicensure Application

If your license expired less than one year ago, contact and notify the board to renew your license.

If your license expired more than two years ago, the board requires that you write an ASWB qualifying exam to restore your license. However, you must apply for re-licensure and obtain approval from the board before proceeding.

Re-licensure costs $153.
