Ohio Social Work Licensure by Endorsement — Quick Guide
Ohio does not have formal reciprocity agreements for social workers. Instead, the state offers licensure by endorsement for applicants who are already licensed in another state.
If you hold an active social work license elsewhere, you may qualify for an Ohio license at a comparable level—as long as your education, exam, and experience meet Ohio’s requirements.
Who qualifies for licensure by endorsement?
- Licensed social workers in another U.S. state or jurisdiction
- Applicants with a qualifying social work degree (BSW or MSW)
- Applicants who passed the appropriate ASWB exam for their license level
- Applicants whose supervised experience (if required) meets Ohio standards
What you’ll need to apply
- License verification from your current state board
- Official transcripts showing your social work degree
- ASWB exam scores (must match the Ohio license level)
- Supervision documentation (for LISW/LISW-S, if applicable)
How the process works
- Confirm equivalency. Make sure your current license aligns with Ohio’s requirements.
- Apply online through the Ohio eLicense portal.
- Send required documents (verification, transcripts, exam scores).
- Respond to any Board requests for additional information.
Important things to know
- No automatic transfer: Applications are reviewed individually.
- Exam alignment matters: Your ASWB exam level must match the Ohio credential.
- Additional requirements may apply: If your original state’s standards differ, the Board may request more documentation or deny equivalency.
